In
maths this week, we have started our new topic of multiplication and division.
We started by recognising equal and unequal groups. We then made groups of objects
and used this speaking frame to describe them.
There
are _____ groups
There are
_____ in each group
There
are _____ groups of _____
Please ask your child to make groups of
objects and then describe them in this way. Here are some questions, about recognising and making equal
groups, that you could try at home.
The
next day we added equal groups. We used the speaking frame to describe the
groups and then used our maths facts to calculate the total.
There
are _____ groups of _____
There
are _____ altogether
We
thought of ways to record this, including repeated addition. So four groups of
five can be recorded as 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 25. We also considered if four groups
of five has the same total as five groups of four. Ask your child what they
think and if they can explain their reasons.
Here
are some of the questions we answered:
We will
be continuing our learning about multiplication and division over the coming
weeks. Please help your
child secure their counting forwards and backwards in 2s, 5s and 10, and start
to learn to count in 3s. We will also be multiplying any 1-digit number by 2,
so please practise doubles at home too.
On Wednesday we had a SpAG
lesson looking for pronouns in texts. We used the link below to explain what
a pronoun is.
You may like to be pronoun
detectives when reading with your child.
On Friday we wrote our own
recount about the Victorian Christmas workshop. We had to remember to include our non
negotiables including
· punctuation
· spelling
of common exception words
· handwriting
and the most important
features of a recount which are using
· time words to sequence
· expanded noun
phrases to add detail
· words to extend sentences making it more interesting
for the reader like and, but and
because

If you have a trip out at the
weekend or over the Christmas holiday your child may like to write a recount
Phonics
We have been learning
about the alternative spelling for s.
ss – normally in the middle or end eg missing, hissed, dress
The /s/ sound spelt c before e, i and y eg pencil, circle, Pacific
ce – end or middle eg princess, voice, police, mice
se – normally end eg house, cheese,
Your child may like to write sentences with these words in.
Spellings – we have been
practising the Year 2 common exception words and time words – Yesterday…..
First…….Next…….Then……After……At last
Handwriting – we practised
On Thursday, we enjoyed a
Victorian workshop in school. We had the opportunity to handle a range of
objects from the Victorian era, ask your child to name all the items below and
explain their purpose.
We learnt what poor children
and rich children may receive as Christmas presents. Ask your children to name
and describe some of the gifts a Victorian child may receive.
We then used cloves and satsumas
to make our own pomanders. We learnt that in the Victorian times these were
used as Christmas decorations and after Christmas to keep clothes smelling nice. They were burnt the following
Christmas eve, to bring good luck to the household.
We will be continuing our
reverse advent calendar until the end of term. Please bring in an item or two
for the food bank, if you can. Thank you.
We hope you have a good weekend The Year Two Team |
