Friday 10th January

It was lovely to see the children back in school on Tuesday, looking rested and, strangely, older! We hoped everyone had an enjoyable Christmas break and we have enjoyed hearing what the children have been up to.

This week in English we have been revisiting our learning about nouns, adjectives  and verbs.
On Tuesday we started by grouping a selection of words.
Once we had identified some were  nouns, adjectives  and verbs we focused on nouns – naming words
We made our own list of nouns and then chose a noun to write a sentence.  We had to underline the nouns in our sentence. Next we could challenge ourselves by thinking of a noun and writing a riddle like sentence.
I am spherical in shape.
You can gently turn me around.
I am used by people who are interested in places.
I have oceans and continents on me.
What am I?
I am a globe.
Your child may like to write their own noun riddles at home
On Thursday we focused on adjectives – describing words .
We added to our list of nouns by thinking of an adjective to describe each noun.  After that we wrote our own expanded noun sentences for the nouns on our list.
We had to remember the rule adjective comma adjective noun.

I have a  kind, helpful friend called Sophie.
Your child may like to write their own expanded noun phrase at home

On Friday we focused on verbs – doing words.
We made our own lists of verbs and then identified verbs in sentences by underlining them. Which are the verbs in these sentences? How do you know?
Annie brushed her hair.
Amjid read his books.
Neena swam without armbands.
Ben rode his bike.

Can your child identify each type of word in this sentence.
Hector sticks all the pictures in his big scrapbook.

Can they think of an alternative and more interesting adjective to use instead of big.
Can they write their own sentences that includes at least one noun, one adjective and one verb?
At home when reading your child may like to a detective looking for the different type of words.
They could record the words they find in a table like the one below.  When recording the words they can practise joining their letters carefully.
Nouns – naming words
Adjectives – describing words
Verbs – doing words
Spelling
This week we have introduced the children to the format of their spelling lessons which will begin next week. Each child will have their own spelling journal which must be in their book bag everyday as they will be using them throughout the week.  At the home over the weekend they can practise and extend what they have learnt that week.  It is important that you provide the opportunity for your child to practise little and often so they become the best speller they can be.  Please come to the Spelling meeting next Thursday evening at 7.00pm to find out how you can support your child with their spelling.

This week in maths, we have been continuing our learning about division. We practised diving a number of counters by equal sharing, using this speaking frame:

I have ____ to start with.
I share them into ____ equal groups.
I have _____ in each group.

Some of us also recorded the division and inverse multiplication calculations.

The next day we practised diving by grouping. We used counters and ‘grabbed a group’ of a given amount. We used this speaking frame to explain what we had done:

I have ____ to start with.
I have made groups of _____.
I can make _____ groups.

It is important that children practise both ways of dividing as this help them understand the links between division, multiplication and repeated addition.  It also helps if they are secure with their 2, 5 and 10 times tables, so please keep practising these, including questions such as ‘How many 5s in 35?’ and ‘How many 10s in 130?’.

The next day we practised making equal groups of different amounts. and recording the calculations. Here are some examples for you to try at home.

On Friday we used our learning about dividing and grouping to solve calculations using the two times tables. Here are some examples for you to try at home:

Our topic this term is Town and Country. We will be learning about the geographical features of cities, towns, villages and coastal locations. This week we have been revisiting our learning about Harpenden and identifying the physical and human geographical features that make it a town. Ask your child if they can describe and explain the geographical features of Harpenden. At the end of the half term the children will have the opportunity to make a 'shoe box' landscape - either a village, town or city. Please could you keep any spare shoes boxes you have, ready to bring in for week six.

We hope you have a good weekend and see you on Monday!
